With a solid, unmoving box in the center constructed with structured, parallel lines I wanted to juxtapose this with fluid and organic shapes outside forming separate inner and outer structures. I was drawn to the idea of identity - personal identity, cultural identity, the identity that you share with yourself versus others. The central box represents the facets of yourself that you hold closest to you, your core values, morals, and ideologies. The fragmented pieces on the outside represent the sides of yourself that you show others. Transient and forever changing, each side of the sculpture displays a new meaning, a new angle. The negative space that is formed through the shadows of this sculpture also conveys a new message and new understanding.
